Los Cabos: A 50th Birthday Celebration

All-inclusive, beach front, no mommy duties, fun and relaxation with the ladies…..YES, please!

A time was had when I packed my bags (one carry on and one backpack), and we headed for Los Cabos to celebrate my cousin’s 50th birthday. This was my first visit to Mexico, and what better time, than to commemorate such a milestone for one of my favorite people.

We had arranged transportation that would drive us 45 minutes from San Jose Cabo Airport to our resort.  After clearing a couple security checkpoints to enter the area at large, then the resort property specifically, we were greeted with warm friendly smiles and margaritas!

Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos

This resort is stunning! Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos sits ocean side and would be our home away from home for 5 days. Adorned with all the rock and roll artifacts you would expect from the Hard Rock; the walls and spaces are filled with photos, clothing, songs, instruments, etc., from all your favorite artist.

We dipped our toes in all five of the pools, ventured the waterslides, and took in the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.  You could spend all your time with your toes buried in the warm sand, watching and listening to the soothing crashes of the waves.

Although my baby’s did not make this trip, there would have been plenty for them to do here. I am sure they would have loved spending their days in the Kids Club, playing games, doing arts & crafts, and of course, singing and dancing.

The Food

I was hesitant and did not have any expectations for the cuisine, given my last all-inclusive resort dining experience. At the very least, I hoped to have a burger hut to get me through the stay.  However, I was pleasantly surprised. The food was very good.  Whether I wanted a quick snack, dessert, pizza, surf & turf, or Japanese, one of the 8 restaurants on site was able to please and satisfy my hunger. Not to mention, the room service came hot and quick every time! This foodie was happy.

I should note that this is a truly all-inclusive experience regarding the food/drinks. With the exception of “Awaken Your Senses Dining,” it is all included, so order away!

Off-Site Explorations

Prior to our arrival, we planned and made reservations for the birthday dinner and excursions away from the resort. Since no one in our party was familiar with the land, nor spoke the language, we were sure to book and have everything arranged prior to our arrival.  We did not encounter any issues or safety concerns the entire trip.

The Birthday Dinner

The birthday girl chose Cocina Del Mar for her birthday dinner.  This place is a vibe! This outdoor eating experience is situated atop a cliff overlooking the Sea of Cortez. The mood and ambiance made for the perfect 50th birthday celebration.  I do not know what was more enjoyable: the live music, the food (make sure you get the buttery garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus), the waves crashing, or the company.  No matter what you are craving, this is a must do dining experience when you find yourself in Los Cabos.

The Excursions

You know I can not go on vacation without partaking in an excursion, or two: ATV, camel ride, tequila tasting, and a sunset sail were on the itinerary.

ATV/Camel

I have been ATV riding before, but this was somewhat disappointing.  Although the people were great, I felt shorted on the time.  Those in our group that were novice riders and less adventurous, said the 25 minutes was plenty. For those who were seeking a little more time and thrill, including myself, this did not fully fulfill.

After the ATV ride, we petted, fed, and rode camels; this was quite the experience.  A 20 minute guided trail walk, which led us along the beach is a check off the bucket list.

Sunset Sail

You would have thought I would have learned my lesson in the Dominican Republican, when it comes to me and small boats.  After this stomach turning cruise, I promise I have learned now.
Don’t get me wrong, the boat was spacious and amazing. The crew was attentive and accommodating. The landscape and sunset were simply beautiful.  Although the waters were not as rough in Los Cabos, the seasick outcome was all too familiar.

Needless to say, this was the last time I will set sail on a small boat, so no need to ask or offer (you hear me ladies).

All in all, this was a great first experience in Mexico. Aside from the yellow wrist bands that served as our room keys and could not be removed until check out without a $75 replacement fee, I  would definitely recommend Los Cabos and the Hard Rock Hotel, giving it 4.25 stars.

BTW: It was unusually cool for this time of the year. The temperature and winds at the resort, were some 10-20 degrees cooler than downtown and along the Sea of Cortez. Bring a sweater.

Share your Mexico experience.
