As we embarked on our first of many family RV adventures in Letha—the RV my mom purchased to fulfill a longtime dream—it wasn’t just a trip to Texas Hill Country; it was a healing journey.
The recent election results left our spirits shaken, but we found solace and strength together as a family. We reminded each other of the power of resilience, the importance of family, and the joy of simple moments. Our healing journey took us south, through heavy rain and right into the peaceful sunny hills of Fredericksburg, Texas.
My mom had always dreamed of owning a RV, and this weekend was her first chance to “stretch her legs” in her new home-on-wheels. With all of us —Aliah, Arrington,Uncle Carl, Grantie, and me—onboard, we set off on her RV’s maiden voyage to discover more than just beautiful landscapes; we set out to find peace and reflection amid uncertain times.
Our journey to FireFly Resort RV park was full of beautiful hilltop views and quiet stretches of countryside. The park itself was a hidden gem with its state-of-the-art pool, bar, playground, live music, and serene RV slots nestled into the Texas landscape. For a couple days, we left behind the constant stream of election news, instead focusing on this healing journey as a family. We embraced laughter, fresh air, and each other’s company, choosing to focus on what we could control—our moments together, our mindset, and our gratitude.
Teaching Moments on Our Healing Journey
Throughout the trip, our conversations drifted toward hope and resilience. My son, who had watched the presidential debate with curiosity and a thousand questions, eagerly absorbed our discussions on the importance of voting at every level—local, state, and national. Watching the election process unfold was a valuable lesson for him. And although he’s still young, this journey to understanding the impact of our voices is a vital part of his own healing journey.
Early voting with my children was also a moment to reinforce our family’s values. We won’t always see the results we want, but we can still carry hope forward. The process of being part of a democracy, of understanding our role in shaping the future, is a part of this election season’s healing journey for my family and me.
A Weekend of Reflection and Joy
In addition to teaching moments, this weekend offered us the peaceful environment we all needed. We explored Main Street, admired the scenic vineyards, took in the fresh air, and even managed a little yoga session. This was a “healing journey” that went beyond what we expected. It was about staying grounded and present, even after moments of disappointment. We walked slowly, breathed deeply, and felt the calm wash over us after the storm—both literal and emotional.
One particularly meaningful aspect of the weekend was honoring my Pop’s memory on his Heavenly Birthday. My mom’s resilience and joy, even on this special day, showed us all that healing is ongoing. It is a journey without a clear end. She showed us the importance of moving forward, finding joy, and continuing on our own healing journeys.
Looking Forward
As we wrapped up our trip and headed back, we felt stronger and more at peace. This was just the beginning of a new chapter in our family’s journey, one marked by togetherness, resilience, and joy. We’ve already started planning our next RV trip during the Christmas break. We are ready to continue exploring both the road ahead and our paths to healing.
This season of change and challenge has reminded us that healing isn’t a destination—it’s a journey we choose every day. We know we must hold tight to each other. Given that we know God is in control, we will trust the process. And whenever possible, we will catch ourselves outside, laughing, learning, and loving fully.
