I, like many, was left disappointed when Miss Jackson, because I’m nasty, canceled her ‘Unbreakable’ tour in 2016. Although I received my refund with no problem, I thought I had missed the chance to see a legend, and did not know if I would ever have another opportunity.
Got ’til It’s Gone
My cousin and I were on our way to the Chris Brown concert, enjoying the radio pre-concert mix, when they announced that Janet Jackson would be here the following week. I had no idea she was coming to town, or on tour for that matter.
Before my cousin gained her full recollection, “That’s right Ludacris is…” I was on the ticket app, “Got’em! Don’t even worry about it! We will be in the building!”
And for $42…seriously! A steal! How could we pass up this golden opportunity. I knew we would be getting more than our monies worth!
Growing up I knew every song and choreography. I may or may not have fallen more than once trying to walk a chair down. Although nervous, yall know I’m shy, I was more than ready for the group performance of ‘I Get Lonely’ at a local fashion show some 30 years ago. As long as there was no cancellations or unexpected emergencies, I would be ready to dance all night yet again.
Any Time, Any Place
Because the concert did not start until 8pm and was on a Thursday, we had plenty of time to sit and eat. For me there is nothing like Tex-Mex: enchiladas, chips & salsa, guacamole, and a skinny margarita, just one, I know my limits, to have me ready to dance all nite…and did!…again!
When we made it to the arena, I immediately noticed that this was a slightly more mature crowd than we had seen last week with Breezy. Nonetheless, everyone seemed so excited and ready to lose control.
Hot In Herre
As soon as we entered the building it was going down. Nelly was the special guest on this stop of the tour; we had no idea. He performed all the hits we wanted to hear and I was on my feet and there for it. But ultimately, we were there for Damita Jo. Good thing we had fueled up, because with these two great performances, I would need all my energy.
I must admit, I am not as versed on Janet’s latter albums and singles. However, after her dancers graced the stage with the strobing lights setting the mood, the LED screens instructing us to ‘Jus Dance’, and that pink draped curtain rising to reveal a petite, fully clothed, yet sexy as hell, Janet Jackson, I lost my mind!
By the time I had taken in all the lights, regained my composure, and stopped screaming, she was half-way through her first set, and newest music, and moving into all the classics: ‘That’s The Way Love Goes’, ‘Nasty’, and ‘When I Think Of You’.
Rhythm Nation
I have not had this much fun, dancing so hard at any concert in my life. You would have thought we were auditioning. I do not know if it was the nostalgia, the legend that is Janet Jackson, or the crowd around us, also dancing for their lives. It is safe to say, I was not the only one at home in the 90’s watching MTV videos all day, because the choreography was giving! I ‘Miss You Much’! (You did the choreo right there, didn’t you? lol)
It would be the end of Act IV and almost 40 songs into her discography, when her brother, Michael Jackson, appeared on the LED screen and the crowd, I, lost it. ‘Scream’, which segwayed into ‘Rhythm Nation’ was the ultimate highlight for me.
By now I was winded and on cloud nine. Janet had left the stage and some of the crowd began to exit. But like my aunt says, “stay through the credits.”
There is no way a legend as sweet as Janet would just leave us without saying goodbye. Plus, as my cousin pointed out, “Nope, this can’t be. I haven’t heard ‘Together Again’“, the tour’s namesake.
Then Janet appeared on the screen backstage getting refreshed. The remaining crowd and myself went wild, missing what she was whispering to us. Then out she came again. Encore! Performing two more songs and bidding us farewell. “I called it!” my cousin exclaimed!
Love Will Never Do (Without You)
This concert was a 10/10! In a week’s time we have seen two superstar performances. One just as legendary as the other. We have already purchased tickets for our next concert, although it is not until October. Maybe we will find another before the summer season is over.
Have you attended any concerts this summer? What was your favorite part of the show?
