I can not believe my 25th high school reunion is this weekend.
It feels like just yesterday that I was walking the halls of DeSoto High School, carefully avoiding the red zone and feeling nervous about heading off to college. Fast forward 25 years, and here I am again, filled with a mix of excitement and nerves as I prepare for my 25th high school reunion— Class of ’99. It’s incredible how time flies, yet some things never change.
When I think back to my high school days, a few moments stand out. For one, I almost didn’t graduate! I made a 40 on my senior paper, which nearly cost me my diploma. My advanced English teacher, who wasn’t exactly qualified for the job, accused me of plagiarism. “There is no way those could have been your words and thoughts.” It was a stressful time, but look at me now! (Cue Chris Brown).
Then there was the time I got Saturday school on the day of my prom—yes, on prom day! My crime? Writing excuse notes for me and a fellow art student so we could sneak out of class for a quick sunshine break. Harmless, really, but it landed me in hot water. I did make it to prom that night, though, only to discover another girl showed up in the same dress! Mine was blue, hers red—both of us looking fabulous despite the mix-up.
High school wasn’t without its challenges. I twisted my ankle during preseason basketball, sidelining me for almost the entire season. But I bounced back, graduated, and headed off to Xavier University to study pre-med. Life has taken some interesting turns since then. I became a pharmacist, owned my own pharmacy in my hometown of DeSoto for 10 years, and now, I’m enjoying the role of an at-home mom while finding joy in writing.
Despite all these years, some things remain constant. I still lean on two of my best friends, Alberta and Omar, for love, support, and advice. Had it not been for them, I’m not sure I would even be going to this reunion. Introverted as I am, their persuasion got me to RSVP. And although I’ve dipped in and out of social media over the years, I’m eager to see familiar faces and catch up with old friends.
As the reunion approaches, I’m filled with curiosity. How have my classmates grown, and where are they now? While I may be stepping into this event with a bit of hesitation, I’m also filled with excitement. Here’s to reconnecting, reminiscing, and celebrating how far we’ve all come since ’99!
BTW: Names have been withheld to protect the “innocent” (you know who you are).
