Healing Through Family Connection: Lessons from Thanksgiving in Houston

Healing through family connection has a unique way of healing us, grounding us, and reminding us of who we are.

This Thanksgiving in Houston was no exception. From long conversations with loved ones to unexpected twists in plans, this holiday offered a masterclass in family, flexibility, and healing.

The Journey

The holiday weekend began with a nearly three-hour drive from Dallas to Houston, thick with holiday traffic. Arrington and Jaxxon, his favorite cousin, insisted on traveling together, their excitement for the trip palpable. Watching their bond grow throughout the weekend was a joy to witness and set the tone for the reconnections we all experienced. We often joke, “If you don’t love me the way Arrington and Jaxxon love one another, I don’t want it.”

While the rest of the family got settled into our respective accommodations, my cousins faced a hiccup. Upon arrival in Houston, they discovered their hotel was booked 30 minutes south of the planned location. Despite the inconvenience, they made the best of it.  Another example of the resilience that defines family gatherings.

Thanksgiving Eve: A Solo Adventure

Once everyone was tucked in and settled for the night, I made a solo drive from far North Houston (Conroe) to South Houston to visit my dear friend Teal in her stunning new home. The hour-long journey through the maze of Houston freeways was worth every mile. Spending a few hours with Teal, catching up in her beautifully curated space, was grounding and comforting. It was a quiet reminder of the healing power of deep friendships.

Thanksgiving Day: A Feast for the Soul

Thanksgiving morning was brimming with activity. The older kids played basketball at the park, while the younger ones enjoyed the playground. Later, the soccer enthusiasts kicked balls outside, their laughter and spirited shouts echoing through the crisp fall air. Watching them connect through play was heartwarming, a reminder of the simple joys that create lifelong memories.

By afternoon, we had all gathered at my cousin Darius’s home, where he, his wife Charita, and their daughter Taylor hosted the grand Thanksgiving dinner. The spread was as bountiful as it was tasty.

The dressing with giblet gravy and peach cobbler (both with and without ice cream—I had to try it both ways!) were my personal favorites. While I may or may not have gone back for thirds, the real nourishment came from celebrating together.

This Thanksgiving also marked what would have been my Granny’s 98th birthday. My Aunt Phil’s thoughtful gesture of a birthday cake and a heartfelt  “Happy Birthday” sing-along reminded us all of Granny’s love and the deep-rooted traditions she left behind.

Play and Togetherness

After hours of eating and chatting, about a dozen of us ventured out to bowl. While I initially resisted, wanting instead to sink into post-meal relaxation, I’m glad I went. Watching Aliah win the kids’ lane (yes, with bumpers) was a highlight, as was the laughter and competitiveness that only family can bring.

The day also included plenty of football on TV (the Cowboys even won!) and a spirited game of Phase 10, where I came this close to winning. It’s in these seemingly ordinary moments—kids giggling over games, adults laughing over cards—that the healing power of family shines brightest.

Lessons in Flexibility

The holiday wasn’t without its challenges. Thanksgiving morning, the hotel called to tell me they had checked us out early due to a booking error. While initially irritating, it turned into a blessing for Mom and me. We stayed with Aunt Lynda and Uncle Puntus, whose home was beautifully decorated for Christmas and offered far superior accommodations.

Meanwhile, the cousins adjusted to their alternate hotel location farther south. Despite the mix-up, everyone showed grace and flexibility, proving once again that the strength of family lies in its ability to adapt and find joy in the unexpected.

Reflections on Healing Through Family

This Thanksgiving in Houston reminded me that healing through family connection isn’t just about grand gestures or perfectly planned events. It’s found in the everyday acts of love—car rides with cousins, sharing a meal, or playing a simple game. It’s in the flexibility to adapt when plans change and in the joy of simply being together.

This holiday season, take time to nurture your family connections. Whether through shared meals, heartfelt conversations, or impromptu moments of fun, embrace the joy and healing that only loved ones can provide. Healing through family connection is a gift that enriches our lives in the most profound ways.
