February is American Heart Month, a perfect reminder that heart health isn’t just about what we eat—it’s about how we move.
In our family, movement has always been a way of life. From Taekwondo and soccer to yoga and nature walks, staying active together isn’t just about fitness, it’s about connection.
Some routines have changed as the kids have grown. What started as neighborhood “nature walks” when they were toddlers has evolved into structured sports and martial arts.
But some things stay the same: my uncle and I still walk about 3-4 miles at least five days a week. And in the summer, the kids and I try to swim 1-3 days a week. Movement is part of our rhythm, and at the core of it all is my daily yoga practice–the one space where I center myself, strengthen my body, and care for my heart in every sense.
If you’re looking for ways to keep your family moving, here are some fun, heart-healthy activities to incorporate into your routine:
1. Walk Together, However it Looks
Walking is one of the best (and easiest) ways to support heart health, and it’s even better when it becomes a shared experience.
- Hot Chocolate Marathon: Occurring every February, we just finished our annual challenge, and next year, I hope the kids can join in on the fun.
- Treasure Hunts & Story Walks: When my kids were younger, we made walks into adventures—looking for bugs and flowers, racing to the next stop sign, or hoping we would see a wild hog or coyote (or maybe not).
2. Move with Purpose: Yoga & Martial Arts
Taekwondo has been a game-changer for our family—The kids and I are green stripe belts now, and it’s been amazing watching the kids build confidence, discipline, and endurance—and me too.
But for me, yoga is my foundation. It’s not just stretching—it’s strength, balance, and breath. It’s how I stay grounded through the chaos of motherhood, coaching, and life.
- Try a family yoga flow—kids love animal poses, and even a few sun salutations can be a great way to start or end the day together.
- Not into yoga? Dance, boxing, or martial arts offer similar cardio benefits while keeping things fun. I know the kids and I enjoy a quick dance party.
3. Play Your Way into Fitness
Fitness doesn’t have to look like a structured workout. If it’s fun, it’s movement.
- Soccer & Tumbling: Coaching my son’s soccer team for another season keeps me just as active as the kids. Afterall, I have to demonstrate and push the boys and this competitive momma is not letting them outdo me.
Watching the kids in their tumbling class is another reminder that movement should feel like play. The amount of core strength they are building while having fun is amazing. - Backyard Games: Tag, relay races, and DIY obstacle courses are a great way to get the heart rate up—no gym required.
4. Bike, Swim, Explore
- Bike rides around the neighborhood are a favorite—wind in your face, legs pumping, no screens in sight. It had been years since I was last on a bike until I got on my neighbors and transported right back to being a child riding for miles far past where my mom said I could go.
- Swimming is our go-to in the summer, at least 1-3 days a week, and it’s one of the best heart-healthy, low-impact exercises out there. I know protecting our hair can be a concern, but these swim caps have done the job.
- Short hikes on RV trips have become part of our family tradition, proving that movement doesn’t have to be planned—it can just happen.
5. Keep it Fun, Keep It Flexible
The best fitness routine is the one you’ll actually do. Some days that’s Taekwondo. Some days it’s yoga. Some days it’s a simple walk. The goal isn’t to be perfect—it’s to keep moving, together.
