This Will Be A Blog About Thanksgiving…To My HFP Family

Andre 3000 appears to be a man that has always walked to the beat of his own drum, or as we have come to hear, blew to the wind of his own flute (and other wind instruments).

New Blue Sun

Thanksgiving to his  album, New Blue Sun, which has seamlessly been integrated into my wind down steam shower routine. What I love most about this album is the audacity. The idea that the world had been waiting for a rap album from Andre 3000 for almost 20 years, and he gave us a calm, spiritual, wordless piece. One of the best rappers (the best are genius composers of words) of all times, gives us an album with not one word. Impeccable.

This man did not care what we were asking of him, he gave us what he had to give, what felt good to him, his truth, and I’m here for it.

Setting out to do what feels good to you, what is authentic to who you are at the moment, can be liberating, and a bit frightening, if I’m honest. Learning to embrace the idea and concept that as we evolve, pages will be turned, chapters will end, books will be closed, and that is all okay and inevitable.

I recall hearing a woman in her 70s, “I have been 10 different women over my lifetime.”

I’m at least on the third version of myself. I pay homage to the woman I was at 31 that had the audacity to open an independent community pharmacy, along with her business partner. Although we never rivaled CVS or Walgreens, the nearly 10 years we spent serving our community, praying, worrying, accomplishing, and everything in between, was not a failure but a lesson to me.

I am so proud of what I was able to achieve in that time: both personally and professionally. Now 42, I feel present and free in this version of myself, which has/is taking some shedding (of skin, weight, ideas, tears, etc.) to reach, but I am having fun in the discovery.

Although my journey has veered me away from pharmacy, at least for now, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge what I value the most about my time in the pharmacy: the patients and customers. The people and community of DeSoto, especially, who came to be more like family, and who have supported me then and now.

I have not had a chance to express the depth of my gratitude.

So, with thanksgiving in my heart:  to the women who nurtured and fed, talked and listened, encouraged and shared lessons that I will carry with me forever; to the men that kept an eye out for my safety, laughed and highsided with me, fixed or crafted; to All that told someone, who then told someone, and chose to patron our locally owned neighborhood pharmacy, you continue to inspire me as I find the courage to present my voice and have the audacity to step into my new chapter. It is with thanksgiving in my heart that I humbly say, Thank you!

We’d love to hear from you! What do you think of Andre 3000’s new album, New Blue Sun? Are you having the audacity to live your life? What are you thankful for in this holiday season?

  • I have not heard his new album but will definetly check it out. At age 23, I had the audacity to skip grad school and join the Dallas PD. For my 54th birthday I happily retired and have no regrets about that decision. Now at the present age of 61, my audacity is to travel and live my life just as I please with love always in my heart. Thanks AD.

  • That album was amazing. I listen to solfeggio frequencies on a daily , and for someone with the intellect and position in the industry to drop something like this was needed. Artists in the industry often talk about the power of frequencies and how it can control the mind and tune our body and provide healing . Most of the time the frequencies in our music are negative to our mind, body and society. Nevertheless this album was therapeutic and gives a calmness to the body! Like he said people need less rap and more healing.
