Transitioning back to normalcy after the whirlwind of the holiday season is no small feat.
Add unexpected disruptions like snow day cancellations (even when the snow doesn’t stick!) and the challenge to maintain family routines becomes even more real. Meanwhile, hearing about the devastating fires in California has made me pause to reflect on how grateful I am for the safety of my family, even amidst minor inconveniences. Here’s how we’ve been navigating the shift back to our usual rhythm while embracing the inevitable changes along the way.
Finding Stability in Routine
With the kids returning to school as planned last Tuesday, I felt optimistic about re-establishing our family’s schedule. But then came the snow threat that shut down school on Thursday and Friday. Of course, the snow barely made an appearance on our side of town, leaving me in charge of an impromptu homeschool session. True to Texas, as of the publishing of this blog, the weather has already shifted back to the 50s, with the coming days promising temperatures in the mid-60s.
While I consider myself a nurturing mom and an evolving coach, teaching is not my forte. However, Thursday became a day of creative learning—we tackled math, money, reading, geography inspired by our recent RV trip, and a little taekwondo for good measure. By Friday, we shifted gears, indulging in a movie marathon and tumbling practice (we homeschool on a 4 day week schedule). These moments reminded me that while routines provide stability, flexibility often fosters unexpected joy.
Prioritizing Wellness
The colder weather and “icy” roads have kept us indoors more than usual, sidelining my cherished morning walks. Instead, I’ve turned to indoor yoga sessions, which, while not my favorite, have been a great way to stay active. Yet, being cooped up has its drawbacks. I’ve found myself munching and lounging more, leaving me feeling sluggish. To counteract this, I’ve been gently coaching myself back into healthier habits, reminding myself that every small step counts.
Attending our regularly scheduled taekwondo classes have been a bright spot—a consistent part of our weekly routine. These moments of physical activity help ground us amidst the unpredictability.
Embracing Grace and Progress
The holiday road trip, combined with a break in routine, left my body feeling stiff and out of sync. A visit to the chiropractor was just what I needed to kickstart my physical reset. I’m also learning to give myself grace. It’s okay to feel out of rhythm; what matters is taking steps to regain momentum.
As we ease back into our routines, I’m reminded that life is as much about adaptability as it is about planning. Whether it’s juggling canceled school days or reworking my wellness regimen, I’m choosing to embrace these changes with patience and intention.
This week has been a lesson in finding balancing between routine and flexibility, proving that with a little grace and perseverance, it’s possible to keep family goals on track while welcoming the unexpected.
BTW: You are doing better than you think! Every step forward, no matter how small, is proof of your progress. Keep going!
