Setting Intentions for the New Year: A Healing Journey

As we step into a new year, the practice of setting intentions takes center stage.

Last January, I shared my thoughts on making commitments rather than resolutions—a shift in mindset that emphasizes progress over perfection.  So now, I ask you:  How did you do with the commitments you made last year?  Did you show up for yourself?

I’ll admit, this year wasn’t without its challenges, but every small step forward mattered.  On this road trip, reflecting on my own journey, I’m reminded of Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight (his best movie, in my humble opinion).  The film, which tells the inspiring story of Black women overcoming the odds to serve during WWII, fueled my spirit to continue showing up for my healing, growth, and evolution.  Like them, we can find strength in purpose and persistence.

Why Setting Intentions Matters

Setting intentions is about aligning your actions with your core values.  It’s a healing practice that calls for mindfulness, grace, and consistency.  Intentions aren’t about perfection—they’re about living authentically and creating space for transformation.

Tips for Intentions That Stick
  1. Reflect and Release:  Acknowledge what didn’t serve you this past year and let it go.  Growth starts with clearing space.
  2. Be Specific: Intentions thrive on clarity.  “I want to prioritize self-care” becomes “I will spend 10 minutes daily meditating.”
  3. Stay Flexible: Life happens. Adjust your actions without abandoning your intention.
  4. Celebrate Small Wins: Progress, no matter how small, deserves recognition.

As I continue this literal and figurative road trip, my intention remains clear:  to live out loud, embrace growth, and find joy in the journey.  What’s yours?

A Year of Showing Up

I want to hear from you, especially my long-time readers who started on this journey last year.  Did you honor the commitments you made last year?  Were you able to show up for yourself in big and small ways?  And if not, what can you do differently this year?  Remember, it’s never too late to recommit to your healing and growth.

As we set intentions together for the year ahead, let’s draw inspiration from the unwavering determination of the women in The Six Triple Eight.  Their legacy reminds us that showing up—day after day, no matter the challenges—creates impact and inspires change.

BTW: “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” — Alice Walker

Let’s reclaim our power this year, one intention at a time.

  • Last year, I did the vision board, had positive of quotes of affirmations all around me and life started lifeing.
My husband of 31 years, who just turned 60 on Christmas Eve, was diagnosed in earlier March of 2024 with Early Onset Dementia. What a blow to our family. The dynamics of our lives have changed. People want to call me a caregiver but I don’t feel like that, he’s still capable of taking care of hisself. So this year, this New Year 2025 I’m praying for strength, grace and understanding of my purpose In this while living and loving my husband

I can say that I did several things I wanted to do in 2024. I traveled to four countries that were on my Live-It list. I went to all just happy to go, but ended up enjoying all immensely. I made a serious decision about my physical health and went for the correction that I hoped would benefit me for my remaining lifetime. I made new friends and touched bases with old. I vowed to try to just be a more productive and controlled me. I continued gardening with moderate success and introduced to my niece and grand niece the joys of it. Overall, 2024 was an adventurous year for me and I hope 2025 will be me more or the same plus greater.
