The Healing Power of Laughter in Family Life
Laughter is more than just a reaction to something funny—it’s a powerful tool for healing, connection, and joy. In my family, humor is woven into our daily interactions, helping us navigate life’s challenges with lighter heart.
Finding Joy in Shared Experiences
On a recent snowmobiling adventure in the mountains, laughter became the highlight of our day. My son, Arrington, was overwhelmed by the lack of safety rails and once returning off the mountain top, dramatically declared, “I have never been so excited to see ground with no snow on it. When I saw there was no rail, I thought I do not want to be RIP.”
Meanwhile, my mother, at 65 years old (in a couple weeks), took her time on the trail, leading to even more laughter when the guide mistook her sloth-like slow pace downhill for a breakdown. “Why I waited to the age of 65 to do some shit like this? I can’t believe I let you talk me into this. I will never do no shit like this again!” she announced, making the entire family crack up. All fears aside, she said it was an adventure of a lifetime and she had a great time.
These moments, filled with unexpected humor, become cherished memories, reminding us that laughter is the glue that holds us together.
The Mental Health Benefits of Laughter
Laughter is a natural stress reliever. It lightens the mood, strengthens bonds, and provides a momentary escape from life’s pressures. For me, it serves as a way to “forget” stress and focus on what truly matters—connection and joy. In my healing journey, I’ve leaned into humor more than ever. I choose comedy over drama, and I actively seek out moments of joy. I try to avoid negativity at all cost.
How to Incorporate More Humor into Family Life
In my household, laughter is an everyday occurrence. Some of our favorite ways to keep the fun alive include:
- Bebop rap battles – Encouraging the kids to think on their feet and play with words.
- Impromptu dance parties – Because movement and laughter go hand in hand.
- Seeing life as an adventure – Even when things don’t go as planned, we find ways to laugh through the unexpected.
Just joking around, roasting each other in a loving way, and surrounding ourselves with fun, witty people make humor a natural part of our daily routine.
A Choice to Find Joy
I still believe laughter is the best medicine. Watching my kids interpret the world through their unique, witty perspectives keeps me entertained daily—one, if not both of them, make me laugh out loud everyday.
I intentionally choose joy, surround myself with people who make me laugh, and even exchange funny reels with my brother and best friend throughout the day. It’s all about mindset—when you look for joy, you find it.
Tips for Embracing Humor in Your Own Life
- Don’t take everything so seriously. Life is unpredictable, and mishaps often make for the best stories.
- Try new things as a family. The adventure itself is the fun, not just the outcome.
- Learn to laugh at yourself. I believe it’s one of the healthiest habits you can develop.
Laughter has been an anchor for my family, making the hard days lighter and the good days even brighter.
