Pizza Pizza

To this day, my all-time favorite food is pizza.

Pizza is versatile and easy to eat. I am never too full to enjoy a good slice of pie. Growing up I looked forward to game night at my aunt’s and an assortment of Pizza Inn on the dining room table. Some sat and ate two-handed gliding style, others folded, the one-handed shove, or crust first. The eating style was your own, but the food was always accompanied with music, laughter, family, and fun.

I can remember as a child going to Red Bird Mall praying my mother and/or aunts would find it in their hearts, after a long day of mostly window shopping, to let us get a slice of Brother’s Pizza. We would beg and received a lot of No’s but when it was Yes! Heaven! in a cheesy, thin, crispy, New York style. I am salivating just thinking about it.

Pizza seemed to be centered around fun: school fun day, birthday parties, skating parties, Friday movie night. Perhaps I enjoy the association more than the pizza.

I was a big fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Nun chuck toting Michelangelo was my favorite). They had fun, kicked butt, and ate slices all day. How could I be in the crew.

With that spirit in mind, one of my dream jobs would be to travel and eat, particularly pizza. I have eaten pizza in a few cities and states, but have yet to make it to New York to sample some of the countries most renowned and arguably best pizza.

I have been on a hunt to find the best pizza in the DFW; some live up to the hype and too many do not. Crust, flavor, portion and quality of sauce and toppings are of equal importance. I enjoy a thin & crispy and a soft & fluffy style pizza. Give me a Coke on the side and I am in pure bliss.

These are two of my favorites pizzerias:
  1. Cane Rosso
This Neapolitan style pizzeria has a few locations in the DFW area. The pizza is cooked quickly in a wood-fire oven leaving the dough light and airy with the slightest char. I can eat an entire pizza by myself. Don’t judge me. I love that the dough does not leave me feeling heavy. I have had a few of their pizzas and enjoyed them all.

Two of my favorites: DELIA and the HONEY BASTARD. Then there is the JABRONI, and the VOODOO MAMA JUJU; you know what, I’ll take them all! I like to duck in early before the crowd, grab a small table and enjoy my own company savoring every bite.

This is also a good place to go with a few friends, each order a different flat bread and sample feast with some good conversation!
  2. Brother’s Pizza & Pasta on 75
Found this place a few years ago. I am not completely sure if this is the same Brother’s Pizza, but it is close enough for me to enjoy the nostalgia. When I sat down and took my first bite and was transported right back in Red Bird Mall all those years ago.

This is a no fuss pizzeria located in a strip mall on Central Expressway. There is limited seating, but most people are picking up their orders. The staff was friendly and greeted us with a smile. I was hooked on the first bite.

If you are like me, you like your food piping, so that first bite trying to chase my melted cheese, while also not burning the roof of my mouth was glorious!

A slice of pizza is one of those things that just makes me happy. Fresh ingredients, smoking hot, cheesy, I’m there!

Tell us your favorite pizza joint? We’d love to hear your favorite pizza memory.

  • Love that!! Campisi’s is my favorite 😋 been eating at the one on Mockingbird since the 70’s. Celebrated my 19th birthday and my 60th there.
2nd favorite may sound weird but it’s Costcos 🍕

    • It has been years since I have eaten at Campisi’s so I need an update. Not weird at all. I have had Sam’s but not Costcos; I will have to grab a slice the next time I’m in there.

I did not eat pizza until I was well into my twenties. It just didn’t appeal to me. I have a different pizza story. When we were children, your father and I sometimes attended the same school. I was two years ahead of him, so my last year in a school was his first year. He would look forward to when he could attend the same schools with me. One of many reasons was he knew I didn’t care to eat certain lunches in the cafeteria. We received lunch tokens and he would find me and gleefully let me know, “Sister, today is pizza day, can I have your token!” Of course I would give it to him and he would run off knowing he would be able to get two pizza lunches. Every time I eat pizza I pray and think of him with a private smile and the loving memories.

I have a different type of story on why I love pizza. I didn’t start eating pizza until I was in my late twenties. It just didn’t appeal to me. When we were children your father loved pizza, but our mother could not afford to buy it, so pizza days at school was his favorite. He would look at the cafeteria menus and would say to me, “Sister, today is pizza day, can I have your lunch token?” Of course I would give it to him every time and he rejoiced in knowing he would be able to get two pizza lunches on that day. Though decades have passed, every time I eat pizza, I pray for and think of him with a private smile and loving memories.
