Holiday Bread Ideas: Fancy Loaves, Simple Joys, Real Connection

holiday bread ideas assorted

There are so many ways I try to take care of myself these days, especially as the seasons shift, and life gets louder.  But one thing I’ve stopped pretending about?  I love bread!  I love it enough to try and balance the health-conscious version of me, with the woman who still wants to ooh and aah over a warm loaf.

Nothing puts me in a chokehold quite like bread.  You know that Salt-n-Pepa line, “Hey girls, what’s my weakness?”  I’m always tempted to shout back, “Bread!”  I try to practice restraint, I really do—but sit me in a restaurant with complimentary bread, and the self-control goes right out the window.  Sweet breads, savory breads, fancy breads, simple breads….I’m an equal-opportunity lover.

And with the holiday season in full swing, avoiding bread feels almost impossible.  I’m not here to tell you to steer clear—just enjoy responsibly and intentionally, the way we’re learning to give ourselves grace in everything else.

This year, I’ve noticed more and more people talking about reimagining their holiday tables.  Some families won’t be preparing a big, traditional spread, and honestly…I get it.  Groceries are high.  Stress is higher.  And sometimes the most meaningful meals are the ones that don’t require a day and a half in the kitchen.

That’s why holiday bread ideas have been whispering to me.  A croissant sandwich with roasted turkey.  A brioche bun warmed with a little butter.  Thick slices of sourdough stacked with leftovers.

Simple things that still feel special—like you took an ordinary moment and added a little softness, a little creativity, and a little care.

Someone recently told me their family does a “potluck soup” for the holidays.  Every person brings one ingredient, and once everybody arrives, they make the soup together.  Add some cast iron cornbread and voila! Low cost, low stress, full heart.  Now, that feels like the season to me.

And for me as a Black American, both realities can exist at the same time:  I can acknowledge the painful, uncomfortable truth behind this holiday, and also see the beauty in using this time to intentionally gather with the people I love.  We’ll talk more about that part next week—but for now, I’m finding peace in the small joys.  The warm ones.  The ones that come served on brioche, sourdough, croissants, and raisin bread.

Sometimes, that’s enough.
