The Ugly Side Of The Great Outdoors

I love everything about outside, except outside.

I know I talk a lot about how much I love being submerged in the great outdoors, and I do. As Moana says, “it calls me!” But, I want to make sure I am being completely honest and transparent. If I never had to treat another mosquito bite, deal with the pollen and my allergies, or fight another disrespectful June bug (they been here since March, but okay)….What a most wonderful world it would be.

the great outdoors

The flowers and herbs planted are suppose to keep the mosquitos at bay, but apparently nothing can keep them from getting to me. Not to mention, the flowers  contain pollen, so you see the dilemma.

I face my fear of bugs daily.  And I don’t want to hear, “what is that little bug going to do to you? You are so much bigger than the bugs.”

To that I give exhibit A: Mosquitos are some of the smallest, yet most deadly creatures on Earth; I stay praying I don’t catch the Nile.

We don’t kill bees…they are essential to the ecosystem.

I have gotten use to the major pollinators: bees and wasp.  They tend to fly by, fulfill their curiosity, then away to mind their own business.  Although grasshoppers and crickets are irksome, it’s the June bugs and flies that are the most inconsiderate and irritating.  Like why are you over here by me? And loud? You literally have all of outside. Why are you so close to me? Ugh!

outdoors allergies

Spring is in full bloom and my allergies have been out of control. To combat, I’ve been flushing my nasal cavity, using eye drops, and taking an allergy pill.  A steam shower right before bed, gives enough nasal congestion relief in the evening, to get me through the night peacefully…. But when morning comes, my allergies like to start the day off running strong.

My eyes, mainly the right one, drains uncontrollably. So forget about wearing any eye makeup; it ends up all over my face. The young men on the soccer team I coach, (I know what I said, that’s another story, mind your business), are always so concerned, “Coach. Are you crying?”

the great outdoor pollen

At the end of the day, is being in the great outdoors worth all of that…..YES!  It is the small price I am willing to pay.

Studies continue to prove, and as I see first hand within my own life,  the healing powers of nature. I manage my allergies and I’m learning to get over and tolerate the nuisance and fear of pest. For me, being outdoors is the perfect example of taking the good with the bad…’tis life.

BTW: I was traumatized as a child by a June bug and have not quite gotten over it. I’m killing them on sight.

What keeps you from the great outdoors? Got a bug story, love to hear it.
