Crafting A Quiet Space – My Outdoor Patio Oasis

In a household of six unique personalities, finding a quiet space for myself was very important.

As much as we all love one another and enjoy being all up in each other’s face (said with the smallest hint of sarcasm), having time and space to yourself is essential. Being the outdoor girl that I am, it was only natural that I planted my flag on the backyard patio for my quiet space. I utilize this space just about every single day—winter, spring, summer, and fall.

Outside, I can escape the distraction and responsibility of being something for everybody and just relax. I am both entertained and calmed as I watch and listen to nature. I wanted the space to fit my life and needs, to be welcoming, simple, organized, and a serene outdoor extension of the inside of the home.

No matter how elaborate or simplistic your design vision, these are 8 points to consider when transforming your outside space (or any space for that matter).

1. Assessing the Space

Understanding the space that you have to work with is important. What is the size and layout of the space? Consider how much sunlight, shade, noise, privacy, etc. is present, and what you will need to enhance or correct any of these issues to fit your needs.

2. Defining Your Vision

What is the purpose of your space? For me, my quiet space is a place to start my day with a warm cup of lemon water. It is where I reflect on my day in the evening with a hot cup of tea. This space serves as my (our) yoga studio, as well as a place for me to escape the sounds and responsibilities of the house, if but for a moment.

3. Adding Greenery and Natural Elements

Incorporate plants and flowers to enhance the atmosphere. As I have mentioned previously, little has deterred the flies and mosquitoes. However, herbs and flowers that I planted add beauty and ambience. Be sure to consider the climate and the amount of sun the area will get when incorporating plants and flowers. Opt for low-maintenance and visually appealing plants. Limited space? Consider a vertical garden or hanging pots. Note: If you are timid with insects and bugs, know that greenery and flowers will attract bees, wasps, butterflies, etc.

4. Creating Shade and Shelter

Need to create shade and weatherproofing? We are blessed to have a large pear tree that provides natural shade for my quiet space. However, you may decide you need to create shade and weatherproofing. If so, an umbrella, pergola, awning, or other temporary or permanent solution may be needed.

5. Integrating Relaxing Lighting

Choose ambient lighting options, ensuring adequate lighting for evening use. I wanted to have soft lighting in the evening without using electricity. Solar string lights across the ceiling of the patio and warm twinkle lights wrapped around the columns were the perfect addition.

6. Selecting Comfortable Furniture

I wanted to keep the furniture to a minimum. After all, my space was limited and, for the most part, it would be just me utilizing the space. Again, knowing what, how, and who will use the space helped in the selection. I kept it simple and budget-friendly, with a pair of lightweight, sturdy stackable chairs.  I wanted a pop of color and to tie the space with the inside decor, so I went with teal. Adding a cushion or pillow provides extra comfort and decor.

7. Personal Touches and Decor

Incorporate personal items and decor to make the space uniquely yours. I love these inexpensive reversible outdoor throw pillows. I created a spot for my yoga blocks and stretch bands. With the way that hawk has been coming in here these past few winters, I added a lamp heater last year for added comfort. This year, I may add weatherproof curtains for privacy, rain, and wind protection.

8. Ensuring Functionality and Maintenance

Keep the space organized and clean with plastic bins. To preserve the beauty and comfort, I power wash the concrete at least once a year and sweep as needed. Keep the flowers and herbs watered and trimmed. There is really nothing more needed.

Everyone deserves to have a quiet space to collect their thoughts, gather themselves, and come back to themselves, whether outside or not. I encourage you to start with these 8 points to craft your own oasis. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive.

Everything about my quiet space makes me smile. It is my favorite space of the house. Living in a busy world and with a busy family, I look forward to being here where life slows down. I can be with myself,  and see and hear God’s work.
