Puzzling Fun: Bonding, Brain Boosts, and Why You Should Make Time for It

In the spirit of National Puzzle Day, let’s talk about one of my favorite (but often neglected) pastimes—puzzles!

While I can’t say I carve out time routinely for them, puzzles have brought moments of joy, bonding, and even unexpected lessons to my family and me.

From Sudoku to colorful jigsaw puzzles, and those brain-bending teasers auntie puts on our easel that challenge us for days, puzzles hold a quiet magic.

One of my favorite ways to unwind is solving Sudoku, whether in solitude or during a cozy evening with my aunt.  She has a knack for picking up puzzle books filled with crosswords, rebus brainteasers, and of course, my beloved Sudoku, from her favorite thrift store.

When the kids are tucked in, and time allows, we listen to soothing music, I sip tea, and we tackle the challenges together. Those evenings remind me that puzzles are more than just fun—they’re a way to bond, stimulate our brains, and broaden our approaches to problem-solving.

We also enjoy putting together picture puzzles as a family.  There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing all the scattered pieces come together into a complete image.

Even when life gets chaotic—between RV trips, holidays, and everything in between—puzzles remind us to slow down and savor the process of piecing things together, one step at a time.

Research shows puzzles improve memory, boost critical thinking, and reduce stress.  They offer a much-needed mental workout in a fast-paced, digital world.

Perhaps this National Puzzle Day, I’ll make more time to revisit this fulfilling hobby and chip away at the brainteaser still sitting on our easel.
